Chauncey + Lewis

These new 4 townhouses in the Stuyvesant Heights Historic District echo the proportions, scale, and material palette of their historic neighbors. The main facade aligns with nearby townhouses, while the bay window on the secondary facade nods to the porches of the adjacent two-story wooden homes. The roofline, with its irregular rhythm, recalls the mansards and dormers that punctuate the district.

Material choices reinforce this dialogue between past and present. Two alternating brick types with contrasting mortar colors evoke the historic variety distinguishing individual townhouses. And at the street level, recessed entrances, stoops, and metal planters animate the facades and restore continuity to a block that had long stood vacant.
